The Forge is less than 1km from the majestic Altamont Gardens, donated to the State by Corona North and maintained by the OPW, the gardens are open year round and regularly host walking tours and gardening events. The adjoining walled garden is home to Robert Miller’s wonderful nursery which displays a large collection of inspiring plants for your own garden. Children love the rambling and carefree walk down to the Slaney River.
Not surprisingly ‘The Forge’ gets its name from a blacksmith’s forge that once occupied the site. Situated on a four cross roads the old forge stood alongside a post office and shop - it was the center of community life for those who lived in the townlands of Kilbride, Boggan, Sherwood and Milltown.
Today the restaurant, operating from the beautifully restored c. 120 year old granite building, carries on the tradition of the four cross roads as a meeting place where passers can have some lunch, do business, get news, or simply share life’s little moments over a cup of tea. All are welcome.
